My name is Joseph Tomsha and nutrition has always been a part of my life.  As I was getting older, I somewhat made wiser choices, but only the basics is what I knew; protein for my muscles, vitamins were good for you, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away".

It was October 24th 2009 that i had my life altering experience. I was leaving my house to work at a Halloween party for some friends as a bartender. At my first stop light a legally sober man who blew a ".07", ran his red light and hit the front left side of my motorcycle. Thankfully i was wearing a very good leather jacket and a great helmet. I was taken to the emergency room at a Tustin hospital, where my girlfriend found me. I was unconscious when they took me to the hospital. They immediately put me on life support. I was in an induced coma for about four weeks. I was not able to breath on my own, so the doctors decided to put a trach and feeding tube. They also fixed my shattered cheek bone, broken wrist, and two broken collar bones. After a month of staying in Tustin hospital, they had to move me to Park Anaheim Health Care Facility which was a lot cheaper than a normal hospital. I had to stay there three months till I got rid of my trach and feeding tube. When I was leaving Park Anaheim Health Care Facility to a rehab center in Tustin, I was down to 148 lbs from a ripped 220 lbs. I wasn't able to hold my head up on my own and my bones were sticking out, I looked scary.

I stayed in Tustin rehab for about two months. They were miraculously able to help me gain weight, stood me up, made me walk with a lot of help. In that period I lost my youngest brother Jeff to meningitis. The sad thing is I have no memory of him.

I was finally home after a long struggle. I thought everything would go back to normal in a short amount of time; however my journey to a long recovery was just starting. My next recovery place was St. Jude where I practiced speech and occupational therapy for my hand. I continued going there for about two months. It was exhausting as I had a fresh brain injury and my head was unable to hold basic information. I used take long naps after St Jude. As I started to get stronger, I needed to find a therapy place where i could practice walking. After my moms persistent phone calls. I was able to get into High Hopes (therapy place). They made me practice walking and balancing. I was getting stronger. Then we discovered a wonderful gym for disable people called Good Will Gym. I would go to High Hopes for two days then my grandmother and my girlfriend would take me to the gym for 2-3 days a week, where I started lifting again.

After doing the same routine for a year and a half I was ready to take the placement test at the wonderful one and only ABI program at Coastline College. To get into this program was my ultimate goal. I remember feeling nervous and excited at the same time. The placement test was long and difficult. It took me three days to complete. I was finally inn!

As I'm getting closer to my graduation date in anticipation, I feel like the next chapter of my life is opening itself up with a great mystery. I'm excited about my future and enjoying the present moment, which is all that we have. The past is history and the future is a mystery. Life teaches you lots of great lessons (ready or not). Be prepared.
cheers to all...
